Ariel is a fictional character and the protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature, *The Little Mermaid* (1989). She also appears in the film’s prequel television series (1992–1994), the direct-to-video sequel *The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea* (2000), and the prequel *The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning* (2008). Jodi Benson provides her voice in all official animated portrayals and related merchandise. Ariel ranks as the fourth Disney Princess, holds the distinction of being the first nonhuman princess, and is unique in being the only princess to become a mother to her own child.
